Wheel steered examples
One rudder - twin wheel cable system

Example 150 shows twin WP800 pedestals linked via flat sheaves and articulated sheaves are used to link to the quadrant. Please click on the image to open a 3D PDF model in a separate window. By clicking on it and holding the left button while moving, you can rotate the model.

Example 151 shows twin WP800 pedestals each driving a quadrant via a custom cross wire idler. The system consists of two completely independent steering systems guaranteeing full redundancy. The sheaves on the idler can be rotated to align to the quadrant. The mounting of this system is extremely quick and simple as the pedestals bolts have matching holes in the idlers, so with tightening 8 bolts, the complete steering system including pedestals in installed. Example 151a shows twin WP800 pedestals driving a 80° quadrant via a custom wire idler. The sheaves on the idler can be rotated to align to the quadrant. The mounting of this system is extremely quick and simple as the pedestals bolts have matching holes in the idlers, so with tightening 8 bolts, the complete steering system including pedestals in installed. Example 152 an optimized solution for production boats. The (gray) traverse combines all sheaves, rudder stop and autopilot drive system. The mounting of this system is extremely quick and simple as the pedestals bolts have matching holes in the traverse, so with tightening 8 bolts, the complete steering system including pedestals in installed. The autopilot drive is very easy to integrate by replacing one of the sheaves by a sprocket with a shaft and autopilot flange. Fitting the autopilot drive is also just tightening 4 bolts. Example 152a a compact traverse solution for production boats. The (gray) traverse combines all sheaves and rudder stop. As the autopilot drive is separate, the traverse can be more compact. The mounting of this system is extremely quick and simple as the pedestals bolts have matching holes in the traverse, so with tightening 8 bolts, the complete steering system including pedestals in installed. Example 153 is the most basic solution for a twin wheel - single rudder boot. 2 wheels, 2 BS25 steerers, 2 chain sets, 3 pieces of cable, 2 flat and 2 articulated sheaves and a quadrant.

Example 154 shows twin BS20 bulkhead steerers each driving a quadrant via a custom cross wire idler. The system consists of two completely independent steering systems guaranteeing full redundancy. The sheaves on the idler can be rotated to align to the quadrant. The mounting of this system is extremely quick and simple.

Example 155 shows a special cable solution. Due to the angle of the rudder stock it's not possible to drive the rudder direct. This would take too much space. The twin cable system drive the quadrant which drives the rudder via a draglink and tiller lever.

Example 156 shows a double WP400 pedestal steering system. As two quadrants are used, the complete system is redundant and with the autopilot drive there are three independent systems to steer the boat (next to the forth emergency tiller steering).

Example 157 shows a double BS25 cable steering in carbon tubes (not made by JEFA). The custom sheaves are also made by JEFA. An ideal light and compact steering setup for a racer.

Example 158 shows a unique space saving solution: The self-aligning quadrant. The core of the quadrants consist of a universal joint which eliminates the necessity for the cables to be perpendicular to the the rudder stock. Guiding rolls position the quadrant and rudder stops can be integrated.
